Sonia Sotomayor Supreme Court’s justice claimed during the speech on Tuesday that court decisions were standing, because some Democrats and media members suggest that President Donald Trump could not comply with court decisions on his executive orders.
“The court decisions stand whether or not one special person decided to adhere to them,” she said. “It does not change the foundation that it is still a court order that someone will respect at some point.”
Sotomayor did not directly mention the president during her remarks at Miami Dade College, Florida, states to the New York Times.
“Our founders were hellish, ensuring that we do not have a monarchy,” Sotomayor added. “And the first way they thought was to give Congress the power of the purse.”

“The court continued cautiously,” the Supreme Court’s justice added. “It cannot be so far ahead of society that society rebels and neglects, but it cannot be so far behind society not to do the right thing.”
Trump and his administration criticized multiple commands to limit the court on some of their executive actions related on the freezing of financing and access to the Government Efficiency Department (Doge) accesses personal information.
Sotomayor also expressed concern about social media and said, “The Internet creates an extraordinary challenge for journalists and the world.”
“We will lose our democracy,” she warned, unless, she added, the young people took appropriate measures.

Sotomayor criticized The case of presidential immunity in 2024 in his first public appearance since the beginning of the second Trump’s term earlier this month, saying that the legitimacy of the court sets on the line.
“If we go as a court as soon as in front of people, our legitimacy will be questioned,” Sotomayor said during the event in Louisville, Kentucky. “I think the case of immunity is one of these situations. I don’t think Americans have not accepted that anyone should be above the law in America. Our equality as humans was the basis of our society and our constitution.”

The Supreme Court ruled in July that the former president had significant immunity from criminal prosecution for official offenses while in power, but not for unofficial offenses.
Sotomayor particularly wrote disagreement, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanja Brown Jackson, saying that the decision “makes fun of the principle, based on our Constitution and the system of government, that no one is above the law.”
