The incident happened in the first innings of the match when Perth Scorchers were batting. On the second ball of the 16th over, Ferguson hit a leg ball to Connolly, who flicked it over square leg.
Watching the ball go up in the air, Sydney Thunder players Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft ran over to catch the ball. Both players were looking at the ball, which is why they collided with each other.
It was an absolutely horrific crash as Sams and Bancroft were unable to get up after the incident as they slammed their faces into each other.
Bancroft immediately clutched his face and remained bleeding as Sams lay on the ground. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch after the collision to check on the players, and after a while Bancroft walked off the pitch with a bloody nose with a physiotherapist.
However, things looked extremely serious with Sams as he was unable to get up and was carried off the field.
Speaking on air, Mel Jones was shocked as she spoke about the incident that unfolded on the pitch. She said as quoted by Fox Cricket:
“There was a terrible crash. There is a concern here. Both players completely dedicated to the ball, their eyes fixed on it. We didn’t see them coming. This is what you don’t want to see.
“The main concern is about Daniel Sams. That’s Cam Bancroft on his feet actually walking off the ground. It looks like his nose is damaged. Such courage – both of them had their eyes on the ball. That’s the last thing you want to see in any form of sport. It will take some time for the players to recover as well and get things back.”
Also, immediately after the incident, it was confirmed that the duo would not be able to participate in the match. All players, fans, support staff and broadcasters who were present on the field were shaken by the incident, and the match resumed after a long delay.

Meanwhile, commentator Steve O’Keefe felt the large Perth crowd played a part in the horrific collision between Sams and Bancroft, as the players were unable to hear each other’s call.
“It’s going to be so hard to get involved again. These big stadiums, you can’t really hear the players shouting from the ball and something like this happens. Totally random, but it’s horrible to see. You can only hope he comes out of this with minor injuries. As a foreigner, it’s really difficult to get back together now,” he said, as quoted by Fox Cricket.
