Met gala guests, suit!
It was a command from High, because the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York discovered the Dress Code for its annual lavish celebration of fashion in May: “Adapted for You”, a nod accompanied by an exhibition focus on equipment and men’s clothing.
This is a convenient concept – of course, intended to be liberally interpreted – for the first Met Gala exhibition in more than 20 years to focus solely on male clothing, especially black style in male clothing over the centuries.
The Met’s Costime Institute also announced on Tuesday that he would revive what he called the long tradition of the “host committee”-the basis of the new high-celebrated panel at the top of the previously announced gala hosts: Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domongo, and $ AP Rocky and LeBron James. The new committee includes a series of lamps from different fields: athletes Simone Biles and husband Jonathan Owens, Angel Reese and Sha’Carri Richardson; filmmakers of Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee and Regina King; Actors Ayo Edebiri, Audra McDonald and Jeremy Pope; Musicians Doechii, Usher, Tyla, Janelle Minae and Andre 3000; Author of Chimamando Ngozi Adichie; artists Jordan Casteel, Rashid Johnson and Kara Walker; playwrights Jeremy O. Harris and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins; And the fashion figures of Grace Wales Bonner, Edward Enninful, Dapper Dan and Olivier Rousteing.

This year’s exhibition, Superfina: tailoring of black style, will last longer than previous shows in six months, and is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves on fashion: Black Danism and the style of black diaspora identity.
“The topic of this year is not just timely,” Usher said, “but speaks to our rich culture that should always be celebrated widely.”
Richardson added: “Our style is not just what we wear – we move, how we own our space, how we tell our story without saying a word.” Both members of the host committee spoke in a statement provided by met.
Met says that the show “represents a cultural and historical overview of the black style from the 18th century to the present through the lens of Danism.” Miller, Professor Barnard and visiting curator of the show, along with Met’s Stari curator Andrew Bolton, noted at a museum event last year that in the 1780s, “Dandies” was often defined as “Men who dedicated special and sometimes over -dress .
“The historical definitions of Dandiism are ranging from the absolute precision in the dress and tailoring to the flames and the unbelievability,” Miller said. The show will particularly focus on Black Dandism; In a broader sense, it will chronicize the ways in which the blacks used the dress and fashion over the centuries to transform their identity, the museum said.
Hypershapes and architectural zones
Among the artists who contribute to the design of the exhibition is Torkwase Dyson, who will use his signature “Hipershapes” to create independent monumental sculptures or “architectural zones”.
Artist Ike Ude, an exhibition counselor, will say a section that highlights Julius Soubise, one of the first blacks who challenged the 18th -century London social norms.
The show will be divided into 12 compartments, and each represents a characteristic that defines the “dandy” style: ownership, presence, difference, disguise, freedom, champion, respectability, joo, heritage, beauty, cool and cosmopolitanism.
Met Gala will be held on May 5th. Superfina: The black style tailoring will be open to the public from May 10 to October 26.
