Former Teddy Atlas coach says he noticed some tactics that David Benavidez had escaped from David Morrell, which may not have been allowed with other judges who made his fight last Saturday night.
Atlas noticed these two questionable Benavidez tactics:
- Hitting behind the ear
- He pulled Morrell’s guard with his left hand and hit.
Fighters can knock down the guard and hit, but they should not pull and hit him. Benavidez worked the latter. He kept Morrell’s hand down as he marked him with others. The judge should have noticed that the tactic was warned or punished by Benavidez.
Blows behind the head
Hitting behind the head is considered illegal and should be warned and punished by their judge. Atlas calls him “hitting behind his ear,” but more seemed like hitting the back of his head, which Benavidez used against Morrell.
The punching of the rabbit should result in warnings, but the judges have often overlooked it or not notice it. They focus more on stopping low strokes, which is interesting, given that hitting behind the head is far more dangerous.
There were cases in the fight of Benavidez-Morrell who looked like a textbook of Kunić from Benavidez, but nothing was said. That was weird.
