The M23 rebels took control of Gom, the capital of the North Kiva Province, in the East DC.
Ever since only three years ago, rebels who supported Rwanda had continued to progress through the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo more than three years ago, have seized cities and villages and forced people from their homes.
M23 is just one of hundreds of rebel groups in the country and has been fighting the army for years.
But the latest escalation could mark a major shift, with serious implications on regional stability.
So, does diplomacy have an opportunity to relieve escalating tensions?
