Flight passengers discuss the time needed to catch their connecting planes


With so much air passengers traveling from coast to coast, direct flights may not be an option.

Regardless of whether the stops are short or several hours, they are often part of the journey.

A Reddit user posted a question on the “r/americanairlines” forum, wondering if his or her grandmother would have “enough time to connect.”

Sharing a screenshot of the flight, the user had this to say his or her grandmother would travel from Cedar Rapids, Michigan to Savannah, Georgia.

“Both flights are main, which should help, but 55 minutes [between flights] still makes me a little nervous,” the person wrote.

Fellow flyers opened the comments section to provide advice, share experiences and discuss how long it took to connect.

“It’s going to be tight, but you should be fine,” one person said.

The commentator continued, “She should be fine. If possible, choose a seat closer to the front – it will give her a little more time.”

The user shared more context about the Savannah airport, adding, “Terminal 3 is very large, so hopefully your exits aren’t too far apart.”

Another individual commented: “There’s also a chance you won’t even need to change planes, as both flights are A319s and the layover time is normal processing time.”

“Probably,” said one.

The poster replied, “The flight is early in the morning, so hopefully there won’t be any delays on the first flight.”

A user added of the grandmother, “Practically speaking, once she gets off the first plane, she’ll only have a 20-25 minute walk from one gate to the next.”

Gary Leff, from Texas travel industry expert and author of the “View From the Wing” blog, told Fox News Digital that the minimum connection time varies by airport.

“Whether you’re transferring from one airline to another, or changing terminals, you have to go through securityor you’re coming in from an international flight and have to go through immigration and customs,” Leff added — all of those situations are important, he noted.

“Some flights on the same airline and within the same terminal will include shorter permitted connections,” he added.

Leff advised that flights including immigration and changing terminals would require at least two hours.

“You might not miss your flight, but overhead tank space might run out. And that stop for food or a bathroom break by the way? It might not be possible,” Leff said.

A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) told Fox News Digital that Logan International Airport is not setting a timeline for the connections.

“Each airline has a minimum connection time, and this can be different for each due to baggage that needs to be connected, check-in minimums and security minimums,” the spokesperson said.

The individual added: “It can vary, but the average is usually 60 minutes, depending on domestic or international.”

Greg Chin, director of communications for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, said the link depends on the airlines and whether the flight is international or domestic.

“At least two hours is a good recommendation,” Chin said.
