Roe v. Wade is gone, but abortion is still the #1 killer in the world

Abortion was the leading cause of human death in 2024, resulting in the loss of over 73 million lives worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Approximately one million of them were here in the United States, where an average of more than 2,800 unborn children die each day.
Cancer is second with 8.2 million deaths worldwide, followed by smoking (5 million), HIV/AIDS (1.7 million), traffic deaths (1.35 million) and suicide (1.1 million). .
As in previous years, the data show that the most dangerous place in the world is in the womb of an unmarried woman. Tragically, three out of every ten babies born last year died from abortion.

Of course, you are unlikely to see abortion deaths in the data because it would force officials to admit that it is human life in the womb.
The Supreme Court’s controversial reversal of Roe in 2022 saved lives in certain states—and emboldened abortionists in others. Efforts to codify abortion rights in state constitutions have been largely successful. Until last November voters in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota were defeated in the abortion elections.
For years, America seemed evenly divided when it came to abortion. In fact, depending on how the pollsters asked the question, there were many cases where the data seemed to indicate that there were more pro-lifers than pro-abortionists.
Unfortunately, recent votes on state initiatives and the constitutional changes show exactly the opposite. Even in the state of Florida, where pro-life Governor Ron DeSantis was re-elected by a landslide a few years ago, the majority of voters still voted to introduce abortion rights. The only reason it was defeated last November was because there is a 60% threshold for amendments to the state constitution. As it was, 57% of Florida residents voted for so-called abortion rights.
Yet freed from the shackles of Roe, Christians and pro-life Americans, however, have an opportunity to make the case for protecting preborn life in ways we couldn’t until the Supreme Court voted to return abortion to the states.
So how can we change hearts and minds?
Focus on the Family has a very special service to save babies and their mothers from the tragedy of abortion. It is called an ultrasound option.
Option Ultrasound equipment pregnancy resource centers across the country with ultrasound machines to give mothers considering abortion a chance to see their baby in the womb.
Since the program began 21 years ago, more than 500,000 babies and more than 500,000 mothers have been saved from the tragedy of abortion. These are children who would otherwise have been killed in the womb, but are now living full and successful lives.
As Christians, we must continue to remind the culture that the value of human life is not determined by age, place, ability or addiction. Human life has value because of its unique difference as a moral, spiritual, and intellectual being, and that difference begins in the womb.

On my daily radio program, I recently interviewed Nancy Pearcy, a fellow at the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute and a professor and researcher at Houston Christian University. She made the fascinating observation that culture today separates body and mind in a way that devalues the body. This dysfunctional division is what fuels the culture of “hooking up” and morally justifies abortion.
This callous ideology allows a woman to kill the child within her, often multiple times. Research has shown that more than 45% of women who have a miscarriage have more than one miscarriage.

While secular morality breaks down the body, the Bible provides a holistic view. A human being is an embodied soul. There is a telos or purpose in the design of every created thing. We are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27) and the heavens/creatures declare the work of His hands (Psalm 19:1).
As pro-lifers return to Washington, DC later this month to march and show support for unborn babies, we must redouble our commitment to championing the worth and dignity of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
