A Danish lawmaker, addressing the EU, told Trump to “he— give up” because of the candidacy for Greenland
A Danish member of the European Parliament (MEP) attacked the American president Donald Trump amid his attempts to sell or cede Greenland to the United States.
MEP Anders Vistisen, a member of the right-wing Danish People’s Party, spoke about Trump’s efforts at an EU meeting in Strasbourg, France.
“Dear President Trump, listen very carefully: Greenland was part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years. It is an integral part of our country. It’s not for sale,” Vistisen said.
Appearing to anticipate the American president’s occasional salty language, Vistisen said he would couch his remarks in “words you could understand.”

“Mr. Trump, screw you,” Vistisen said. That remark drew an official rebuke from European Parliament Vice-President Nicolae Ștefănuță, who, however, suggested that he too had reservations about Trump.
“If the translation was correct, the term you used is not allowed in this House and there will be consequences for the message you used,” said Ștefănuță, who represents Romania.
“That’s not okay in this House of Democracy. Regardless of what we think of Mr. Trump, it’s not okay to use that kind of language.”
The first son of Donald Trump Jr. he led a small delegation to Nuuk – Greenland’s capital – before the inauguration and met with members of the public and reportedly held lunch.
Both Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the land is not for sale.

The island enjoys relative autonomy in domestic affairs and relies on Copenhagen for foreign policy and support.
The US, however, maintains a US space force presence in Greenland – at the Pituffik (formerly Thule) air base near Savissivik.
A little over 100 years ago, the US successfully purchased Danish land from Copenhagen.
King Christian X of Denmark and the US Senate ratified a 1916 treaty that led to the purchase of what are now the United States Virgin Islands (USVI)—St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Then-President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, approved the treaty.

Wilson’s secretary of state, Frank Polk, said people from the island chain would have U.S. citizenship but not “citizen political status,” according to State Department archives.

Residents, however, were later granted full citizenship by an act of Congress in 1932.
With its roots as the Danish West Indies and originally home to British expatriates, it is also the only US territory where driving on the left side of the road is legal.
