DeSantis lists ‘U.S. Gulf’ in order of winter storms after Trump’s rebranding
On the same day, the president Donald Trump announced a plan to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “America’s Gulf,” a fellow Republican embraced the move in a winter weather emergency order on Monday.
Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 25-13 in response to a historic 1,500-mile long weather system pushing rainy conditions and blizzard conditions east along the Bay and Interstate 10 corridors.
“As an area of low pressure moving across the US Gulf, interacting with arctic air, will bring widespread wintry weather to North Florida beginning Tuesday, January 21, 2025….” DeSantis’ order began.
“…so I, Ron DeSantis… promulgate the following executive order effective immediately …,” the order said, listing a wide range of actions to be taken by state, local and other authorities.

Ice and snow totals are forecast to be “scanty by northern standards,” according to FOX Weather, but will likely lead to “paralyzing impacts across [affected] region,” which includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
Depending on the location, residents can expect one to five inches of snow in an area more used to tropical cyclones than whiteouts.
DeSantis’ order appears to have been released shortly before Trump signed his own executive order making good on his earlier promise.

Trump noted that the gulf stretches more than 1,000 miles from South Padre Island, Texas; arch along Pascagoula, Mississippi; Orange Beach, Alabama; and Pensacola, Florida, and down to the Straits of Florida.
Florida’s Gulf Coast is the longest of any state—from the famous FloraBama Lounge on Perdido Key and its 775-mile harbor to the “Southernmost Point in the Continental United States” designation in Key West.
On Monday, Trump ordered the Interior Department to take appropriate action to change the name within 30 days.
His predecessor also engaged in a number of significant rebrandings – mostly of US military bases in Virginia and further south.
Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, named for General Robert E. Lee, became Fort Gregg-Adams. Fort Bragg in North Carolina, named after General Braxton Bragg, became Fort Liberty. Fort AP Hill in Bowling Green, Virginia, named after General Ambrose Powell Hill, became Fort Walker, and Fort Hood in El Paso, Texas became Fort Cavazos.

Those name changes came amid pressure from the political left to send up monuments and other reminders of the Confederacy.
In Trump’s casehe also returned the name of the continent’s highest peak – Denali, in Talkeetna, Alaska – to Mount McKinley after Republican President William McKinley – the only rare change to rouse his side of the aisle.
In his order, Trump said it was in the nation’s interest to promote America’s heritage and honor the contributions of “visionary and patriotic Americans.”
A representative for DeSantis declined comment.
