Player ratings as Amad hat-trick inspires dramatic comeback
Amad Diallo’s hat-trick in the final eight minutes of their visit to Southampton on Thursday gave Manchester United a narrowly deserved 3-1 win.
The Saints managed to score only one goal in the previous six Premier League schedule, but they still had the chance to score two or maybe three times before eventually taking a well-deserved lead in the 43rd minute.
After Andre Onana denied Kamaldeen Sulemana, Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling, Unitedthe goalkeeper was beaten by his own player. Manuel Ugarte unwittingly deflected a first-half corner beyond his team-mate. After conceding goals from headers, volleys and directly from the flag, United have now added own goals to their growing repertoire of post incompetence.
“We scored a goal,” they chanted ironically Southamptonaway at the end of the first half.
The traveling fans should have had much more to cheer about, but a combination of Onana’s heroics and the known shortcomings of their forward line ensured their lead remained just one goal away with ten minutes to go.
Amad, United’s perennial savior this season, took center stage. Capitalizing on some lucky bounce of the ball, the in-form winger slotted under Aaron Ramsdale to equalise. The clock was ticking down to the final minute of normal time when Amad took the ball again, the player playing a diabolical one-two with Christian Eriksen to put the hosts in front.
The 22-year-old was able to enjoy a comeback in stoppage time, swallowing Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ loose touch to make it 3-1.
