The all-rounder was hospitalized earlier this month following a mid-game collision with teammate Cameron Bancroft, who suffered a season-ending broken nose and fractured shoulder blade. Sams began a mandatory 12-day concussion rest period, during which he flew back to Sydney from Perth.

The 32-year-old cricketer cleared concussion protocols this week and was fit to play in Sydney Thunder’s final regular season game against the Sydney Sixers on Friday. However, the side injury became apparent during his concussion recovery.
Sams left the field briefly with side pain before the concussion incident, but returned to the game. After further medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Sams had a side problem at the end of the season, which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland acknowledged Daniel Sams’ resilience. Copeland emphasized Sams’ invaluable contributions on and off the field, but noted that his health must take priority. He stated that Sams will remain an integral part of the team, although he will not play on the field.
“Daniel has shown incredible resilience over the past week, and it’s a shame to lose him for the rest of the season. His contributions on and off the field are invaluable, but his health and recovery must come first. The whole team is behind him, and we will support him every step of the way,” said Trent Copeland.
“Daniel has been the cornerstone of this club for years and everyone in the team respects him a lot. Although he will not be out on the field, he will remain an integral part of our group. His calm demeanor, wealth of experience and leadership qualities will be crucial in the changing room as we go through the remaining games.”
