An idyllic family day enjoying the newly fallen snow in North Carolina he was devastated after their young son was tragically killed in a sledding accident.
Ayden Sasser was playing outside in Whitsett, North Carolina on Saturday when his sled plunged into a nearby lake and he became trapped under the ice, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said. Police declined to release Sasser’s age.
The hysterical sound of the 911 call captured the frantic seconds that followed freak accident in a small town.
“Please, please,” the unidentified woman is heard telling the operator. “The ice is thin, and they’re trying to get to it. They’re trying to help.”

The caller said a boy was nearby in the middle of the lake and two people jumped into the water to help.
“I think they got him. It’s really cold though,” she said. “I don’t know. He was in there for a good minute. He’s probably cold.”
“I don’t think it’s good. I’m scared. I don’t want him to die,” the caller is heard saying between sobs.

While the child was successfully rescued from the water, investigators said Sasser later died at a local hospital. Authorities said they are awaiting an official cause of death from the medical examiner.
The police said the two first responsible and three other people who helped in the rescue were transported to the hospital for medical examinations. All were released from the hospital after examination, the police said.

In addition to Guilford County Sheriff’s deputies, the Whitsett Fire Department, Guilford County EMS and three other agencies responded to the call.

The boy’s mother, Angel Nicole Sasser, shared the fundraiser on her Facebook page to support her family after their son’s death.

My life…my baby…I don’t know how to proceed…”, wrote the grieving mother on social networks days after the heartbreaking accident. “I just have no words..no energy… nothing… this is all I have right now… I love you all. We just want lots of love… hugs… kind words.”
