Sunderland are now seriously interested in signing the 21-year-old striker in January
Sunderland have made one big signing already this month with the addition of Enzo Le Fee, and the Black Cats are considering adding to that with the addition of a promising young striker, according to one reporter.
Sunderland transfer news
It’s been a great first season so far Regis Le Bris in charge of the Black Cats, as they are firmly in contention for not only a play-off place, but automatic promotion as well. But despite an excellent season, the Sunderland boss is likely to be looking at ways he can improve his squad and adding some fresh faces could be his solution in the coming weeks.

The Championship side are reported to be interested in signing him Ben Brereton Diaz from Southampton this month. The Chile international has struggled since joining the Premier League side, as his form has now seen him drop down the pecking order. The Black Cats are not the only side eyeing the striker, as Blackburn Rovers have also joined the race to re-sign their former player, with Brereton Diaz reportedly preferring a loan move to Sheffield United or staying at Southampton.
The good news for Sunderland fans is that he is not the only striker the club is looking at, like Stoke City. Tom Cannon is also on their radar. Cannon is on loan at the Potters from Leicester City, and there is a chance he could be recalled and then sent out on loan to another team, with the Black Cats and Sheffield United keen to sign the striker.
Sunderland are seriously interested in signing the 21-year-old striker
News of a potential new striker doesn’t stop there for the Championship side, as reporter Michael Graham reports that Sunderland are taking a serious look at striker Matija Frigan.
Frigan is currently playing for Belgian KVC Westerlo since July 2023, when he arrived from Croatian HNK Rijeka. The 21-year-old passed the Rijeka academy, played for them over 30 times and scored 15 goals.
That form earned him a move to Belgium, and he hasn’t looked back, continuing to score goals for KVC Westerlo. Frigan has now reappeared on Sunderland’s radar, as they look to add to their front line. Before his move to Belgium, Sunderland were very interested in signing Frigan, looking at a Offer of £3.4m rejected for his services.
The Black Cats apparently missed out on his signature and are now considering a possible deal in this transfer window. Frigan, who is under contract until 2028, would join Sunderland and compete alongside Eliezer Mayenda, Ahmed Abdullahi, Nazari Rusyn and Wilson Isidoro, who has become a fan favorite at the Stadium of Light. But with Isidor on loan from Zenit St. Petersburg, Le Bris could see Frigan as a long-term replacement if a deal can’t be struck.
