Shakur Stevenson slammed Gervont Davis in an interview, pointing out that he used weight conditions for his opponents and faced “less talented fighters” to make himself look better than he was.
WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) fumed when told Gervonta was unimpressed with his record and asked what he had done in his career to want to fight him. Tank ruled out any possibility of fighting Shakur, considering him unworthy to meet the king. That’s true. Shakur is completely incapable of being in his presence.
Shakur’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is the one who is discussing the idea of him fighting Tank Davis in 2025. Hearn has mapped out 2025 for the Newark, New Jersey native, talking about his fights against the three:
- Floyd Schofield
- William Zepeda
- Gervonta Davis
Now Shakur is even babbling that the fight with Tank Davis is a done deal without him saying anything. Tank is like, ‘What is this guy talking about?’ Shakur is like a spoiled child, used to getting whatever he wants and cringing when someone tells him no.
Stevenson must give Edwin De Los Santos a rematch, prove he can fight without a run, and then face Andy Cruz. The Cuban talent is a better version of Shakur, but with attack, power and willingness to engage. If the Cruz were a computer, it would be the next generation above the Shakur, a clumsy, outdated model from the early 2000s that freezes on the pages.
Accusations of weight loss
“He just doesn’t look right. No offense to him, but I’m a real person. I’m not going to go out there and act like Tank’s not a good fighter,” Shakur Stevenson said Boxing newsreacting to being told that Gervonta Davis said he wasn’t impressed with his record, and dismissed rumors of the two meeting in the ring as he sees no value in a fight against Shakur.
“The same way he asks me what I’ve done for the sport of boxing, I think you should look in the mirror and ask the same question because it’s like what you did?” Shakur continued about Tank Davis. “Even the guys you knocked out were all on the weight clause, the weight cut. It looks good to the public and people who don’t know, but I’m a fighter. I know what’s going on. I know what you’re doing.
“You take less talented fighters and put them in the ring with you and make them look like they’re on his level, but they’re not. “Until he’s fighting an elite level fighter, I don’t want to hear anything from him,” Shakur said.
What Gervonta says is 100% true. Who did Shakur fight during his career? No one good. He beat a couple of washed-up fighters at 130, won three paper titles against weak opposition, and has looked pretty damn bad since moving up to 135. He was booed out of the arena in his fight against Edwin De Los Santos, and the fans ran inside as he drove in his last fight against of Artem Harutyunyan’s weak shot last July in his hometown of Newark.
“Fight someone I fought!”
“He [Tank] he acted like he couldn’t get a lot of people in the ring. Why didn’t he try to get Edwin De Los Santos? Why shouldn’t that be the fight you want? Since you want to talk bad about me, fight someone I fought. And you talked about my performance while I was doing it. So beat me,” Shakur said.
A tank fight against Edwin De Los Santos wouldn’t do anything for him and his career because the guy hasn’t fought in 14 months. He would be coming off a loss to Stevenson, and by the time Gervonta would fight him in August or September, he would have been inactive for 21 months.
Shakur’s stock has fallen since De Los Santos exposed him as a runner on November 16, 2023. He did nothing to change things by fighting him in a rematch or looking brave in his next fight against the lightweight Arten Harutyunyan.
