Rangers manager Philippe Clement never considered quitting | Football news
Philippe Clement claims he never considered leaving Rangers despite the challenges he faced.
The Belgian won the Scottish League Cup shortly after taking over as manager in October 2023, but that proved to be the highlight of his tenure so far.
Moving the financial goalposts over the summer has affected recruitment, key board positions have only recently been filled after he was left to run the club on his own for a while, and a growing injury list has affected his form in recent months.
Rangers – with three away wins in 11 games – are 15 points behind Premiership leaders Celtic, with a section of disgruntled Ibrox fans walking out of Sunday’s 3-1 win over St Johnstone in protest at the board and their public support for the manager.
Ahead of Wednesday’s home game against Aberdeen live on Sky Sportsthey asked Clement if he ever thought he could do without it all.
“No, to be honest, the bigger the challenge, the more I’m hungry for life,” said the former Club Brugge and Belgium international, who revealed that captain James Tavernier and Leon Balogun have been training again and will be assessed.
“I think a lot of people realize that a lot of things have changed here that have made things more complicated in the last few months, but that only makes it more of a challenge to get where you want to go.
“And that’s very clear and now it’s good that everyone is aligned and has the same plan to achieve the goal. So that’s key.
“I am a winner and always have been. When I was young, no one believed that I would become a professional soccer player, and when I was a professional soccer player, no one believed that I would enter the national team.
“So it’s about making the best of every second of the day and being hungry every morning when you wake up, making the best of that day and becoming better and making the people around you better.
“That’s my ambition and that’s my everyday ambition. That’s never going to change.”
