A first home win boosts Town’s prospects

Ipswich claimed their first home win of the Premier League season in the 10th minute of wondering as they saw off Chelsea at Portman Road.

Liam Delap won and converted a penalty in the first half before Omari Hutchinson – who started his career with the Blues – struck in the second.

Chelsea had their chances, with Cole Palmer hitting the box twice and Joao Felix scoring from the back.

But Enzo Maresca’s side failed to find a way through Christian Walton on his return in the Ipswich goal and missed the chance to go second in the table.

It is now just one point from three games for Chelsea as they stutter over the festive period and remain fourth.

Ipswich climb above Leicester but remain in the relegation zone in 18th – but are now just a point behind Wolves and two behind Everton.

Delap has been a shining light for Ipswich this season and did superbly to get a pass into the area ahead of Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen – although the contact looked slight.

The striker buried the penalty – Ipswich’s first in the top flight since November 2001.

Palmer saw a free-kick hit the post and Walton’s shot deflected onto the crossbar before his cross was well finished by Felix. But the Portuguese was offside.

And Ipswich stole a second on the break after Axel Disasi lost the ball, Delap carried it on and found Hutchinson for a clever reverse finish.

Chelsea finished the night with 20 shots but failed to score in consecutive away league games for the first time in over five years.
