Nvidia plans to set up its Asian headquarters in Taipei, according to Taiwanese media By Investing.com
Investing.com– NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: ) plans to set up its Asian headquarters in Taiwan’s capital Taipei, the Central News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing a government official.
The Central News Agency – Taiwan’s national news agency – reported that the chip maker was scouting locations for relocation and would hire at least 2,500 employees in Taiwan. CNA quoted the comments of National Development Council Minister Liu Chin-ching.
The report said Nvidia will also set up its Asian R&D center in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung, while rival AMD (NASDAQ: ) plans to set up an R&D center in Tainan.
Tuesday’s report comes after Taiwanese media reported in December that the company was considering Taiwan as a location for its regional headquarters. CEO Jensen Huang also teased such a move when he spoke at the Consumer Electronics Show last week.
Taiwan is a key part of Nvidia’s supply chain, given its heavy reliance on contract chipmaker TSMC (NYSE: ) and the electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (TW:). TSMC manufactures most of Nvidia’s chip designs in its own foundries, while Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn (SS:), assembles several key components for the artificial intelligence giant.
All three companies have seen their share prices rise sharply over the past two years, amid rapidly growing demand from the artificial intelligence industry.
