Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement after an eight-year legal battle, her lawyer said.
The couple, who married in 2014 and have six children, were among the most high-profile couples in the entertainment industry and were dubbed ‘Brangelina’ by the press.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing “irreconcilable differences.” It later emerged during a separate court case that she had accused Pitt of abusing her and their two children on a private jet that year.
Pitt was not charged following a police investigation into the incident and has denied the allegations.
His lawyers have not commented publicly on the divorce settlement.
Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, said in a statement to People magazine that his client has focused on “finding peace and healing for her family” since the divorce proceedings began.
He continued: “This is just one part of a long process that began eight years ago. Honestly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved that this part is over.”
When news of their split first broke in 2016, the couple said in a joint statement that it would be private — and after that, neither spoke at length about their relationship.
However, details have emerged in overlapping court cases that paint a stark picture of the divorce, with Jolie accusing her ex-husband of “waging a revenge war” and Pitt accusing her of deliberately undermining his business.
Although Jolie’s lawyers have said a divorce settlement has been reached, it’s unclear whether that will end the long-running settlement a legal battle between a couple over a French vineyard.
They were involved in a bitter dispute over Chateau Miraval, the sprawling estate they bought together in 2008 for a reported €25m (£21.3m) and where their wedding will eventually take place.
In 2022, Pitt accused Jolie of selling her real estate stake to Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler without his knowledge to intentionally damage his wine investment. Jolie did not publicly comment on the lawsuit at the time.
The couple was also embroiled in a child custody battle. They agreed on a joint arrangement in 2021.
The couple met on the set of the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and their relationship attracted international media attention.
The marriage was Pitt’s second after his relationship with Friends star Jennifer Aniston. It was Jolie’s third, following actors Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.
Jolie starred in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Changeling and Girl, Interrupted. Her latest film is a biopic titled Mariaabout the opera singer Marija Callas.
Pitt’s filmography includes Fight Club, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Twelve Monkeys. He was spotted at Silverstone this year filming his Formula 1 film called F1in which he will play veteran driver Sonny Hayes.
