ATLANTA, January 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In the wake of Winter Storm Cora, which brought heavy snow, freezing rain and ice North Georgia, Georgia Power since the beginning of the storm, it has restored power to more than 230,000 customers. As of Saturday morning, fewer than 60,000 customers were still affected. Crews are now on the ground and the company expects that nearly all affected customers who can get power will be reconnected today. The company’s quick reaction to the storm was made possible by the implementation of new “smart grid” technologies and the quick work of pre-set teams that were ready to react as soon as safe conditions were created.

Many areas suffered additional damage overnight from falling trees and branches, with the worst affected areas including sections Alpharetta, Jonesboro and Atlanta. As crews work today, they begin by assessing the damage, which is a key part of an effective rebuild. These damage assessment teams are followed by repair teams depending on the amount of damage and access to the area. As weather conditions improve, recovery efforts may accelerate, but temperatures are expected to barely rise above freezing in many areas on Saturday, Georgia Power notes that difficult road conditions and the possibility of continued falling ice, branches and trees may slow progress or cause additional damage.

Safety advice for customers and crews

Georgia Power reminds customers that dangerous conditions exist after a storm and to always follow the advice of local, state and federal emergency services in storm-affected areas.

• Watch out for Georgia Power crews working across the country. If you must be on the road, please use one lane for utility vehicles stopped on the side of the road “ this is the law in Georgia.
• Never touch a down or low-hanging wire. Warn those who go out to play in the snow or clear debris that they should be careful and avoid downed wires.
• Never pull tree branches from power lines yourself or enter areas with heavy snow, debris, or downed trees because downed power lines can be hidden. Customers should call 911 or Georgia Power immediately if they see a downed or low-hanging power line.
