After Justin Trudeau announced his plan to resigned as Prime Minister of CanadaPresident-elect Trump had a plan for his successor.
After Trudeau’s decision, Trump continued to seek to become a neighbor north 51st state of the United States.
Trudeau said there’s not a “snowball’s chance in hell” that would ever happen, but if it does, Trump says he’s hired Wayne Gretzky to be its “governor.”

“I was with Wayne Gretzky. I said, ‘Wayne, would you like to be the governor of Canada?’ I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job than Wayne,” Trump said at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday.
“Wayne wasn’t very interested. But he probably would have liked statehood,” Trump said. “He’s my friend. He’s a great guy. He’s the big one. We call him the big one, right? He is a great hockey player.”
Gretzky attended the victory party for Trump’s 2024 election victory after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris.

Gretzky’s son-in-law, Dustin Johnson, plays on the LIV Golf tour, which has played tournaments at Trump’s golf courses.
Trump said at a press conference Tuesday in Palm Beach that Canada should be a country. On Monday, the president-elect said in a social media post that “many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st country.”
“Together, what a great nation that would be!!!” Trump exclaimed in his post on social networks.
Trudeau announced intends to resign as party leader and prime minister after pressure from his own Liberal Party mounted amid heightened criticism of his handling of the economy and threats from Trump. He said he would resign when the party elects a new leader.

Trudeau, who has led the nation for nearly a decade, has been struggling with it for months a significant drop in his approval ratings over growing frustration over issues such as the rising cost of living and rising inflation.
