When does the January 2025 transfer window close? Key dates

January madness transfer the window is upon us, and clubs around the world are preparing to shell out absurd amounts of money.

While the summer period offers teams the opportunity to strategize, plan and negotiate hard, the winter market is hunted by haste, uncertainty and desperation. It is not the best time to reach an agreement, but often there is no other alternative.

The window is already well underway and a number of signings have been secured across Europe and beyond, with some big names potentially on the move for cut-price deals as their contracts expire.

But when will January’s portable clock chime for the last time? Let’s take a closer look.

More proactive teams already are reinforced their squads during the winter window, with the January market opening on 1 January 2025 in most of Europe.

The Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 all opened their shutters on New Year’s Day, although the Eredivisie, Primeira Liga and La Liga began trading on January 2.

All contracts agreed before the opening of the January window will now be formalized and clubs can also register new signings. Players within the last six months of their contracts can agree terms with other clubs, with Premier League a talent who can only sign preliminary contracts with foreign teams.

Logic would suggest that the January transfer window will close at the end of the month, but when have logic and football ever been friends?

In the UK, France, Germany and Spain, the winter market closes on Monday 3 February. However, the exact closing time of each window varies, with English football business ending at 23:00 GMT.

Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands close their doors a day later, on Tuesday 4 February, while the Turkish market closes only a week later, on Tuesday 11 February.

Registration window for Saudi professional league closes on January 31.

There are an unusual number of elite-level players entering the final six months of their current contracts, leaving them open to cut-price exits or pre-contract deals. On Liverpoolworld-class trio Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are available for talks with foreign clubs, with the latter being strongly linked to Real Madrid.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is another out of contract this summer, while Bayern Munich’s triumvirate of Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane are all time is running out to their current jobs.

Elsewhere, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford could leave Old Traffordwhile his teammate Alejandro Garnacho attracting interest after an unsettled period in Manchester.

Victor Osimhen seems to be dominating every transfer window these days, and the Napoli-owned forward could finally secure his big-money move to the European behemoth. He is currently on loan at Galatasaray in Turkey.
