Trump and Pence shook hands at Carter’s funeral in their first public meeting since leaving office
President-elect Donald Trump and his former Vice President Mike Pence shook hands Thursday at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in their first public interaction in four years.
Pence was seen standing to shake Trump’s hand as the former president made his way inside Washington, DC National Cathedral for funerals. After the two greeted each other and said a few words, Pence shook hands with former first lady Melania Trump.
Former second lady Karen Pence, who was sitting next to her husband, did not stand up, shake Trump’s hand, or appear to greet him.
Trump and Pence have not been seen publicly together since the two left the White House on acrimonious terms four years ago after they disagreed over the results of the presidential election and what legal recourse Trump had to challenge them.

Pence briefly ran unsuccessfully for president against Trump in the 2024 presidential primary — he dropped out in October 2023 — and did not endorse Trump at any point leading up to the November election.
The two have publicly criticized each other over the past few years, including in 2023 when Trump called Pence a “fraud,” and the former vice president said last year that he could not “in good conscience” support Trump.
