Liverpool’s FA Cup preparations interrupted due to snowy weather

Liverpool’s preparations for Saturday’s FA Cup third round match against Accrington Stanley have been interrupted due to the wintry weather that has gripped north-west England.

The Reds were in action in Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham Hotspur at north London on Wednesday night and hopped on what was hoped to be a quick flight back.

The plan was for the players and staff to arrive home that night, rather than staying in the capital or taking the road and being dropped off in the early hours of Thursday.

But conditions ensured it was not safe to land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Instead, the flight ended up being diverted to Birmingham and the party venue was moved back to Merseyside. So the players and staff managed to get home in the early hours.

The Times reported that, in light of the travel chaos, Liverpool decided to cancel the planned practice for Thursday, which was primarily expected to be a warm-up. Arne Slot’s team will pick things up again on Friday and hope there will be no lingering effects from the break.

Things haven’t been easy for Accrington either, who were forced to temporarily abandon their training ground due to the weather this week and hold sessions indoors instead.

Slott went with a mostly full line-up against Tottenham, making the 1-0 defeat to the Premier League leaders somewhat surprising given the contrasting Premier League form this season. But now Slot is expected to rotate heavily for FA Cup tie against League Two opponents.

Accrington’s league form improved in 2025, winning both league games since the turn of the calendar year to finish 19th in the table. They knocked sixth-tier Rushall Olympic and second-tier Swindon Town out of the FA Cup to reach this stage.
