The House is poised to pass legislation that would punish the International Criminal Court for trying to arrest Netanyahu

House iOn Thursday, he is expected to pass a bill sanctioning the International Criminal Court in protest against the arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It would be one of the first acts of the new Congress.

The bill will then head to the Senate, where Republican Majority Leader John Thune, R-D., has promised a quick vote on it for the new president. Donald Trump desk until the moment he takes office.

The last time the House voted on the bill in June, 42 Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the bill, despite opposition from President Joe Biden.

Libertarian-leaning Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who was not afraid to break with his colleagues on Related to Israel of the law, he asked why the law was a priority in the first week of the new term of Congress.

“The United States is a sovereign country, so I don’t give any credibility to the decisions of the International Criminal Court. But how did a bill to protect Netanyahu get into the Standing Orders package that is voted on immediately after the presidential vote? Where are our priorities?!” he wrote on Xu, formerly Twitter, last week.

The bill was reintroduced by Texas Rep. Chip Roy and Foreign Affairs Chairman Brian Mast, both Republicans.

On May 20, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested the arrest warrants Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, as well as Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh and Mohammed Deif. All three Hamas leaders were killed last year.

Netanyahu fired Gallant shortly after the US presidential election.

Khan’s request was unprecedented – it was the first time a criminal court had sought the arrest of officials from Western allies.

Judges on the ICC panel in November approved orders, finding that Netanyahu and Gallant “committed the war crime of using starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts, as the direct perpetrator, acting in concert with others. The panel also found reasonable grounds to believe that they were each responsible for the war crime of deliberately directing attacks on civilians as superiors.”

“The ICC is an illegitimate body that has no business interfering with our sovereignty or the sovereignty of our allies,” Roy said.

“Attempt to obstruct the ICC Israel’s the right to defense only prolonged the war and prevented the release of American hostages by strengthening Hamas‘ morality,” Mast said in a statement.

Israel has waged a vicious campaign to eliminate Hamas in Gaza since the bloody Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Trump has warned both sides to end the conflict and Hamas to return the hostages by the time he takes office on 1/20.

The Illegitimate Tribunal Act would sanction any alien who works to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute American citizens or nationals of an allied country.

It includes the 32-member NATO security alliance and 19 major non-NATO countries, including Israel.

It would also withdraw all US funding to the ICC and bar any future money from going to the court.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., introduced companion bills in the Senate. When the bill passed the House of Representatives last Congress, then-Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., did not take it up for a vote in the upper chamber. With Republicans at the helm, Thune intends to pass the bill and put it on the president’s desk by his inauguration.
