Where are we people in all this? I’ve been wondering that in recent days. In my youth, the focus was mostly local. Washington, DC It seemed so far away. The news on TV was local. Today it seems the opposite of all this. Washington, DC seems to be the center of our orbit. When was the last time any of us watched local news?
The danger of this transition from local questions to national questions is that there is too much of us – we people – to become addicted to Washington, DC for changes in our lives. The truth is that what is happening in DC currently under Trump administration brings huge changes in our lives. However, it is also true that most of the burning problems facing us local in our communities.
My fear is that a heavy focus on DC will end up with too many people who do nothing at a local level. If that happens, then Trump’s Presidency will become a lost opportunity. Trump is just one man and he is only four years old to turn the deep state so rooted into corruption – ideological to monetary. But we people have millions and what we want for the federal level should also be what we want for a local level.
Maybe my perspective is different from most. I live and work on The south side of Chicago And I saw what was going on with people who relied too much on the Government, especially at the federal level. I saw how many too many people surrendered their will and believed that their government would come and save them. Instead, things got worse.
One can only imagine where people in my neighborhood would be today if they believed and invested in themselves and took responsibility for their local communities? Would we have the same lack of small businesses, ownership of homes and lack of quality schools we now have? I can say with absolute certainty: no.
Don’t go wrong what we did. I just started reverse that fall and restore the focus to the local level by building a huge community center and it took us 60 years to reach this point. I knew the problem he faced was local and the solution must be locally. After all, the problem lives locally, not at the national level. It seems to be common sense, but when you look at America, you see how many people have left their community.

The parents handed their children to activist teachers. The parents never attended the school board meetings and one day woke up to find out that these elected officials had taken care of ideology more than teachers. Citizens voted for local politicians with national aspirations instead of local. The newspaper decreased and local news became national. And beyond.
We need that local taste. I believe this is a missing part in this new US mandate that has made the Trump choice. We need to do our part at a local level. We have to move outside our home and hang out with people in our community. We need to leave our echoes and get tangled with the variety of thoughts outside our door.
Most of all, we have to look at ourselves as individuals. What is our individual talent? How can we make a local impact on an individual level? I knew this woman who went to the local library every Friday and read with local children. One year she read with one child. She shared her life story. He shared his own. She never met a child from projects. Never met anyone who survived the Holocaust.

That child went to college. She was still going to the library every Friday and has been doing so for over 30 years. What started a little grew into an effort that influenced so much in the local community. And everything was supposed to be an individual.
What will you do today for your community?
