Several senior Trump administration officials should travel to Greenland next week as the Arctic Island, which the US president has overcome in talks on the formation of a new government and holds local elections.
Mike Waltz, US National Security Advisor, USha Vance, wife of Vice -President JD Vance, and will travel the army and energy secretary Greenland In what is charged as a “private visit” from Thursday to Saturday, according to the people who find out the journey.
The trip sparked concerns among Greenland and Danish officials, as it comes ahead of local elections and just weeks after a parliamentary vote on the island, which is part of Denmark.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire the Arctic Island and even refuse to exclude the use of military force to take it from a colleague of NATO allies. Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr, also traveled to the island in “private visit” in January.
Mette Frederixen, the Danish Prime Minister, responded with horror with a new American visit, saying that it could not be “seen independently of public statements” made by Trump and other officials.
“In the kingdom [of Denmark]We want to work with Americans. But this must and should be cooperation based on the fundamental values of sovereignty and respect between the countries and the people. That’s something we look at seriously, “she said.
Trump and other US officials welcomed the result from the Greenland parliamentary election, it seems that they have equalized the tendency of the voters towards the parties of independence with pressure to become Americans. But a recent poll showed that only 6 percent of Greenland wanted to join the US, and completely 85 percent opposed.
All leaders of the current parties represented in the island parliament have condemned Trump’s behavior as “unacceptable”.
Aaja Chemnitz, a Greenland MP in the Danish Parliament, told Danish television that the visit was a “intermittent interference” in the island’s policy so close to the election.
“Everyone who is trying to mix but are not part of the Greenland society, they have to stick to it. We are for a moment in Greenland history, which is especially challenging because we are so influenced by what is happening abroad,” she said.
Martin Lidegaard, a former Danish minister and an current opposition deputy, said the visit crossed the line of what was acceptable for both Denmark and Greenland. “It will be crucial now to keep Denmark and Greenland together,” he added.
The USha Vance Office confirmed that he would travel with his son “and the delegation of the United States … to visit historical places, find out about the Greenland heritage and attend the avantaata Qimussers, the national race of Greenland.”
The organization behind the dog’s stitch competition said Greenlandcic Media that she had received a large but confidential sum of money from the US consulate in Nuuk, the Greenland capital.
Nordic officials said that because of the private nature, visits were not sure of his precise schedule, but that they expected the waltz to visit the Pituffik space base, a US military installation in Greenland. Danish and Greenland officials said they were open to the increased presence of the US on the island, but not for that.
