This brain can help maintain new habits

Maintaining a good habit is not easy, but one mental hacking that can help consistently is preaching, says Nir Eyal behavior expert.

Production resolution It’s easier than following them. How many times did we sit at the end of the year, found that we would eat healthier or wake up earlier to go to the gym three times a week? Just to break those promises before January is over.

However, being able to develop and maintain a good habit is crucial for a life of a healthy living.

According to the World Health Organization, non -comprehensive diseases (NCDS), including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, are collectively responsible for 74% of all deaths globally. Although these diseases have arisen as a result of a combination of genetic, physiological and environmental factors, behavioral factors also play.

Some of the biggest risk factors in behavior risk – and which can be prevented includes: insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, harmful use of alcohol and tobacco, in accordance with December report from whom.

But there is one brain that could help maintain a healthy habit: preaching. This is according to Nir Eyal, a specialist in behavioral design and the best -selling author “Industrtactable: How to Control attention and choose your life”.

Re-insanting tool

The idea is to use preaching as a tool for a re -engineer or reinforcing your identity. This can help you become more in line with a good habit, Eyal said.

“Have you ever heard a joke: How do you know that someone is a vegetarian? Don’t worry, it will tell you,” Eyal wrote in a recent Linkedin publish.

“This is not just a joke – it reveals something powerful in behavior. People who stick to philosophy – whether it is vegetarianism, Ketou, or a intermittent post – they talk about it,” he said.

When you say to other people, ‘Keto is the way’ or ‘I am reading this book and now I am a follower of this methodology’, or any case – preaching about it, you are more likely to adhere to.

This is because preaching can help strengthen identity, Eyal said. In the same way, the vegetarian probably would not have wondered if he would eat a steak for dinner or someone who would not wake up by Kosher by wondering if they should eat bacon for breakfast.

“When you say to other people, ‘Keto is a way’ or ‘I have read this book and now I am a follower of this methodology’, or any case – preaching about it, you are more likely to adhere to,” Eyal told Eyal CNBC Make it. “What would otherwise be an opinion, it becomes an identity, and it is when it is very, very difficult to shape.”

With the reinforcement of identity, the bias of consistency is another reason why preaching could help in accordance with a good habit, Eyal states.

“If you look at work from the 1980s Robert CialdiniThis is a well -known principle that we strive to be in line with our past behavior, and in psychology we call it a the bias of consistency“Eyal said.

“We don’t want to be inconsistent because it makes us lying,” he said. “So, if you say one thing, try to be in line with what you said. Ironically, even if, deep down, you want to change your mind, it’s hard to do, because you were already dedicated to it.”

Social pressure also plays a role. “When we declare something publicly, we are responsible for this based on our social bonds,” Eyal said. There is a fear that if we leave our habits or publicly listed beliefs, it can poorly reflect us or to be icing from our community, he explained.

“We are a very social species, so everything that threatens the identity of our group is very scary, so we are more likely to remain consistent,” Eyal said.

But the warning is that we should not be “jerk” about it, he noted.

“This is also a great way to lose friends. If people think you put yourself in one group and put them in another group – it may be harmful. So you want to be sure [while] Something is good for you, [it’s] not alienating others. “
