The justice of the Supreme Court says judges must be ‘fierce independent’

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor told students at Georgetown University that judges should be “fiercely independent” in response to the increasing challenges of the rule of law.

Speaking to the Forum on Friday, Sotomayor said that the judges had to “ensure that the state was respected” and court independence and the rights of protected by the Constitution.

Sotomayor did not mention President Donald Trump or his criticism of judges who judged him in some of more than 175 lawsuits challenging his executive orders. But liberal justice acknowledged the concern that the country had experienced the fall of “common norms”, which she said were key to the functional judicial system.

“Once we lose our common norms, we have completely lost the rule of the law,” Sotomayor, 70, said for an hour of interview with the dean of the Faculty of Law, Georgetown, William Treanor.

Earlier that day, Trump asked the Supreme Court to let his administration deport the alleged Venecuela gang without hearing.

PresidentargueHe has powers under the law of 1798, which was previously used only in war times. The deportations are on hold of March 15, when the administration sent two planes of migrants to El Salvador prison, despite the verbal order of the judge to turn the aircraft.

Trump and his assistants have repeatedly blown judges because of stopping parts of his far -reaching agenda. Earlier this month, the president announced on social networks that in the event of deportation, the lawyer was a “radical leaf luder, a problematic manufacturer and agitator” and should be abolished.

After Trump presented these remarks, Chief Judge John Roberts issued an unusual statement, saying that the imperative of federal judges “is not a suitable answer” to disagreement with their judgments.
