Officers in Spain are pushing for tourist tax on canars

With European cities struggling with oversourism, some have implemented various tourist taxes, while others discuss the introduction of taxes.
The community on the Canary Islands, a group of Spanish islands along the coast of Africa, seeks to implement a tax that would finance infrastructure projects for resolving numerous tourists.

Onalia Bueno, Mayor Mogán, said that “tourists who remain in the municipality contribute to paying them what they proportfully suits them with the services and activities they enjoy during their stay,” the Irish Independent reported.

Judge Francisco José Gómez de Lorenzo-Cáceres said that he had created a “inappropriate and disproportionate burden” and had to be regulated by a formal law, the Canary weekly reported.
City Council spokesman Mogán confirmed that the group would complain about the decision, The Independent reported.
Last year, 9.9 million tourists visited the canary islands between January and September, according to Spakic National Institute of Statistics.
