The Indian veteran opener, Rohit Sharma, is likely to continue as the test side captain for the upcoming five -game series against England, starting on June 20. The selection committee has yet to make a final decision, but it is expected that Gambhira’s opinion will be expected to play a crucial role in deciding on the captaincy.
Rohit Sharma was under huge pressure after the defeat of the Indian Test Series 1-3 in Australia. Sharma also went through a bad form of hitting in a test crice. Concerns about the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah and the lack of leaders of the leadership among the younger players further strengthened Rohit’s case.
Rohit Sharma remains a test captain for England – a report
The 37-year-old opted for the final test during the BGT series in Sydney. However, he led men in a blue victory in the recently concluded champion trophy, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. Significantly, it was his second ICC captain’s title after led by India in the T20 2024 World Cup.
According to the PTI report, Rohit Sharma will remain captain of the Indian test despite being thrown out of the final test in Sydney. The report was also stated that Rohit never expressed his desire to deviate from the test cricken.
“Technically speaking, Rohit remains a captain of the test. He voluntarily found himself from the last test in Sydney, where he explained that the team could not continue with multiple blows,” the BCCI source quoted.
“After tests in Australia, India did not play any tests, so there was no change in the test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he did not want to play tests,” the source added.

The report further stated that the final decision on the test captaincy would be rendered later, and the Gambhira gautama point played a key role. The selection committee is currently on the break, but will complete the plans for the England series after IPL begins.
“The selection committee gets a break during the IPL. Obviously, with all television matches, they should not always travel if they do not have a particular strategy or want to watch a particular player close up,” the source said.
“So, after IPL goes, the draft for the England series will be at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhira’s point of view will have a great weight,” the source added.
Team India to start a new WTC cycle with a series of England
India has lost six of its last eight matches, including white washing of 0-3 against New Zealand. Team India failed to qualify for the World Cup Championship finals (WTC) for the first time.
Rohit also struggled with the baton and returned to the wound trophy for Mumbai, but failed to make a significant impact. However, he performed well in his latest tour in England, reaching 368 runs in eight ups, an average of 52.57, including the century of winning the match on the oval.
The Indian Cricket team will begin its next World Cup cycle in the 2025-27 WTC Test Championship with a test series in England with five matches. England will host the first test at Headinogley, Leeds, starting on June 20th.
