Lucas Akins: The Mansfield player begins the League 1 match, despite being caused by the death of a cyclist in the collision | Football news

Mansfield Town refused to comment on the constant availability of Lucas Akins after starting their league 1 against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night, just hours after admitting that he caused the death of a cyclist in the collision.

Adrian Daniel, 33, died 10 days after being hit by Akins Mercedes G350 in Huddersfield in March 2022.

Akins, 36, acknowledged guilty of charging the cause of death with carelessness or negligence of driving while hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.

Akins, who will be convicted in the same court on April 24, and then played the first half of Mansfield’s draw 0-0 against Wigan on Tuesday night.

Asked if the difficult decision was to choose Akins, said Mansfield manager Nigel Clough BBC Radio Nottingham: “We can’t comment on that I’m afraid.

“We’ve been knowing about it for some time. It didn’t just happen, but we’re not able to comment.”
