Two women were raped in gangs and a man was killed in an attack near the popular UNESCO World Heritage in South India, police reports.
Two women – Israeli tourist and an Indian home operator – are a star with three male tourists near a lake in Karnataki, when they were attacked Thursday night by a group of men, said Reuters police supervisor Ram Arasiddi.
Arasiddi said the attackers pushed men into the Tungabhadra River channel before raping women.
Two men, one of them Americans, survived and the third man’s body was recovered on Saturday morning, he said.
“Five people – two women and three men – they were attacked near Sanapur,” Arasiddi said.
“Two are foreigners, American [man]And another woman from Israel. ”
Police have arrested two men accused of attacking and an investigation is ongoing, Arasiddi said.
Police believe the men followed the group.
According to the testimony of one of the women, the group stood near the temple in Sanapur when three men arrived on a motorcycle and asked them where they could get gasoline.
As one member of the group gave them instructions, one of three men demanded 100 rupees ($ 1.29) from tourists.
“Because the home operator did not know them, she told them they had no money,” the police said.
“When men repeatedly insisted, one of the male tourists gave them 20 rupees.
“After that, the three reportedly started arguing.”
The body of one of the men’s tourists was later found in Tungabhadra Channel in Karnatak County in Koppal.
The case is registered at the Gangavathi Rural Police Station in compartments related to extortion, robbery, rape of gangs and attempted murder.
The victims receive medical treatment at the Government Hospital, police said.
Hampi, an ancient village in the South Indian State of Karnatak, is home to numerous ruins and temples from the Vijayanagar Empire. In 1986, UNESCO declared the place of world heritage.
In the post on X, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah wrote: “The attack and rape of the Israeli citizen and the owner of the homes is the most interesting act.
“As soon as the incident was reported, I received information from the relevant police, conducted a thorough investigation and instructed them to quickly identify the culprits.
“Police have arrested two defendants in connection with the case and continues the investigation.”
The attacks on women in India received international attention last year after the brutal homicide of a younger doctor at a hospital in the eastern town of Kalcuta.
The attack caused national anger and protests due to lack of security for women.
