Greenland’s right opposition won in its general elections, showing almost complete results, dominated by the pledge of US President Donald Trump to take over Danish autonomous territory.
With more than 90% of the ballots on Tuesday, the Democaatit Party – which favors the gradual access to independence – gets almost 30% of the vote, say election officials.
Naleraq, another opposition party that wants to immediately start the divorce procedure from Copenhagen and have closer relationships with the USA, is second to about 25%.
Prime Minister Mute B egede’s inuit ataqatigiit (IA) – also Pro -Novivic Party – is the third with over 21%.
Greenland – The world’s largest island, between the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean – controlled Denmark, almost 3000 KM (1,860 miles), about 300 years.
Grenland manages its own domestic jobs, but decisions on foreign and defensive policy are made in Copenhagen.
About 44,000 Greenland from the 57,000 population was entitled to votes for the election of 31 MPs, as well as local government. There were six sides on the ballot.
SIUMUTA Party – Egede’s partner in the current left -wing control coalition, in fourth place, with almost 15% of the vote.
The other two parties are lagging behind, and Atassut is 7%and Qulleq is just over 1%.
The vote took place in 72 polling stations scattered across the huge island.
Greenland’s strategic place and unused mineral resources were stung by Trump’s eye. First, he floated the idea of buying an island during his first term in 2019.
Ever since he re -assuming his duty in January, Trump has repeated his intention to acquire the territory.
“We need Greenland for national security. One way or the other we will get it,” he said during his address to the US Congress last week.
Greenland and Danish leaders repeatedly rejected his requests.
Egede made it clear that Greenland was not for sale and deserved to “treat respect”.
