A post on Facebook followed a few hours after Trump once again talked about the idea of being taken over by Greenland, who is currently the Denmark territory.
The journalist asked Trump: “What is your vision of the potential annexation of Greenland.”
“I think that will happen,” Trump replied during a meeting in White house with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump said the US needs an island “for international security”.
The president then turned to Rutte and said “we’ll talk to you” about the matter.
“It’s a really appropriate question,” the president added.
Rutte quickly said, “When it comes to Greneland, yes or not joining the US, I would leave it outside, for me, this discussion, because I don’t want to direct NATO in it.”
Denmark, such as the United States, was the founder of the North Atlantic Agreement, a large international federation created in 1949 by the fifths of World War II.
Denmark has controlled Greenland, the world’s largest island, since the 14th century.
However, Greenland has been self -governed since 1979.
On Tuesday, the Pro-Business Democaiaitit Center party won a surprising parliamentary victory at Greenland, gathering 30% of the vote.
The party supports gradual independence from Denmark.
On Wednesday, the leader of Democraatit, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has criticized Trump’s invitation in recent weeks to become a US territory.
“We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danes. We want
To be Greenland, and we want our own independence in the future, “Nielsen told Sky News.
“And we want to build our own country ourselves.”
