President Donald Trump agreed to refuse to impose 25% of tariffs to Canada and Mexico for 30 days, pulling North American neighbors from the edge of a potentially harmful trade war.
After Last-minute calls with Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to strengthen the border of his country with the US to tighten the migration and the flow of the deadly drug Fentanil.
Previously, Trump made an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. She agreed to enhance the northern border with the troops. In return, now they would limit the flow of weapons to Mexico.
But an American tariff of 10% in Chinese imports should still be entry into force of 00:01 est (05:00 GMT) on Tuesday.
Trump said he was planning to talk to his Chinese counterpart soon. He described 10% of import tax as a “opening of salvo” and said that they could become “very, very significant” if the agreement is not reached.
The breakthrough on Monday with Canada and Mexico came as they prepared the retaliation of tariffs to American goods.
After two telephone calls on Monday, Trump and Trudeau posted on social networks that they had reached a temporary agreement to ensure a border that would avoid tariffs for at least 30 days.
Both leaders depicted the plan as a victory.
“As president, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans, and I do just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome,” Trump wrote on his website on social networks.
Trudeau said that Canada implements a $ 1.3 billion border plan (£ 1 billion) that included nearly 10,000 workers in the first place and more resources to stop the flow of fantanil, a synthetic drug 50 times stronger than heroin, which Trump cited as main concern.
The Prime Minister also said that Canada would appoint “Fentanil Car” and launch a common strike with the US in the fight against crime, fental and money laundering.
Much of the security plan for the border of Canada has already announced in December.
Includes improved coordination with US law enforcement, increased information division, limiting traffic on the border and deploying of drones and Black Hawk for control.
The news followed only a few hours after Trump paused a separate tariff on Mexican goods in exchange for that country, which sent 10,000 troops of the National Guard to its border.
President Sheinbaum reported the news of X, writing that she had “good conversation with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty” with her American colleague.
Trump described his telephone conversation with the Mexican leader as “very friendly.”
In 2019, the Mexican government agreed to send 15,000 soldiers to its northern border to avoid tariffs from the first Trump administration.
Trump framed the tariffs as a tool for the growth of American economy, job protection and increasing tax revenues.
“Tariffs for us, no one can compete with us because we are a pot of gold,” he said on Monday afternoon.
“But if we do not continue to win and continue to do well, we will not be a pot of gold.”
Economists, however, warned that Tariffs for Tit-Za-Tat can increase prices for a wide range of products, including cars, wood, steel, food and alcohol.
The items were already removed from some shelves, and the stock markets retreated on Monday before they recovered slightly with the announcement that the tariffs had been suspended.
Andrew Furey, Prime Minister Newfoundland and Labrador, admitted that he had made a little relief for 30 days, but warned Canadians that the trade war was still.
Said the BBC that he is looking forward to being used “a peaceful Canadian diplomatic approach to try to solve all future tariffs,” but warned of further “chaotic” actions of the US president.
“We stayed as Canadians a little confused by this attack by our closest friend, our greatest commercial partner, our ally, family,” Furey said.
Prime Minister Ontario – the most populous province in Canada, which accounts for about 38% of GDP land – she welcomed the break and said that she would suspend plans for retribution.
Prime Minister Doug Ford wrote on X: “Don’t go wrong, Canada and Ontario are still looking at the threat of tariffs.
“Whether it’s tomorrow, in a month or a year … Trump President will continue to use a threat to tariffs to get what he wants.”
On Sunday, Trump indicated that the 27-state European Union would be his next target of tariffs without giving further details.
The US president suggested that Britain, which left the EU 2020, might have been spared many duties.
