The sailor is a somewhat unknown but exciting talent that joins the super league from the NRL. The 26-year-old is known for the pace and around the space in 16 games he played for Brisbane Broncos.
He just met Briers on Bronco, with his former Warrington Wolves half coaching a sailor and convincing him to jump in a super league next to him.
St. Helens gave the Sailor jersey no. 6 for the 2025 season, and although it is a great jump of faith that he will be their new playmaker, Briers believes that Sailor will show everyone the instinctive and leader of the player as he is.
“Well, there are two types of players. There is a player who can train, and there is a player who can approach, and Tristan is certainly training,” Briers said.
“He is his man, he is a leader, but every day he is in our office and asks to become better, and takes what we have to give him, and practice, and also gives us ideas.
“I think his main strength is that he is really training, and probably is one of the best blocks I knew in the Rugby League.
“To come here, far from home, and settled down as he did, it’s amazing. He is a great wealth to our club.
“Tristan is a truly instinctive player, so we want to keep it and also teach him how to control him in games.
“As I said, he is really training and open to it, but above all, that instinctive type of Rugby League player, where he sees things we can’t train, and we don’t want to get it out of it.
“I want to enjoy it and manages to do well in what he does.”
‘Special’ have access to Briers ‘Smarts’
It is also not lost on Sailor, which is an opportunity to work with the coaches he has in Saints, with nearly 1500 matches of Super League play between head coach Paul Wellens, Briera and James Roby.
Now he just wants to combine his talent with their experience to perform the best he can for Saints 2025.
“He is (briers) so good. And I think his wits are just somehow incomparable. And so he somehow passed a lot of things,” Sailor said.
“It’s funny because it brings different structures based on the team and the teams you played.
“Well, I suppose I saw his range of ideas and how he applies to different players in different situations.
“I’ve learned so much from him in the last two years and I have a lot of learning in advance.
“He played, which, 400 games and here is such a legend. So, it’s really special to have someone like him here to show you ropes somehow more.
“And also Paul Wellens), Welo also played the spine, and you have dresses (James Roby). It’s a lot of experience in those three players.
“And then on top of that, Jonny Lomax, Jack Welsby, Daryl Clark, that’s a lot of experience in the team.”
