The White House welcomes the invitation of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Father’s Dead for the Turkish Terrorist Group of PKK to disarm

Istanbul -In the historic move, an enclosed Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Fatherland called on Thursday to members of the Workers’ Party forbidden Kurdistan (PKK) to lay a weapon to end the conflict with the Turkish government that killed tens of thousands of people and complicated US relations with NATO-Sall.

PKK is marked a Terrorist organization by USATogether with the European Unic, NATO and many other nations. The father -in -law’s invitation to disarmament, if PKK acts, is likely to have far -reaching consequences on the entire Middle East, including millions of ethnic Kurds living in Syria, Iraq and Iran.

“I call for a weapon laying down and I take on a historical responsibility for this call,” said the father -in -law in a letter read by Kurdish politicians in Istanbul. “All groups have to lay their hands and PKK must dissolve.”

PKK founded the father -in -law in 1978, initially sought complete independence and statehood for the great Turkish Kurdish minority, but later seeking autonomy. Since then, as many as 40,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of others displaced from their homes with a conflict between the group between the group and the Turkish state forces. PKK has taken several Main terrorist attacks in TurkeyKilling many security forces, but also civilians in Istanbul and Ankari.

He was anxiously arrested in 1999 and served a life sentence in prison in northwestern Turkey, but is still seen as the ideological leader of the movement. Reading his letter was aired on screens set in majority Kurdish cities in the southeast of Turkey, where she was overwhelmed by the crowds of hope for peace.

“There is no alternative to the democracy in the pursuit and realization of the political system. The democratic consensus is a fundamental way,” he said in his statement.

The US announcement will “bring peace to this problematic region”

Berkay Mandiraci, older analyst of Turkey with International crisis group Think Tank, he told CBS News that the peace agreement between the Turkish government and the PKK could “remove this long-time thorn in bilateral relationships”, which could bring with it “many dividends for Turkey.”

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres also expressed his support to the father -in -law’s invitation to disarm, and spokesman Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday that it was a “important development” who offered “a splendor of hope that could lead to a resolution of a long -standing conflict.”

Mandiracles told CBS News that an agreement between Ankara and PKK could also help bring in Stability to Syria.

Mandiracles said that a peace agreement with PKK in Turkey could enhance current conversations between the Kurdish forces supported by the Temporary Government of the United States and Syria, which aims to integrate the Kurdish controlled northeastern regions of Syria with the Syrian state.

Why would PKK disarm now?

“After a decade of intense fighting, PKK seems to be weakened,” Mandiraca told CBS News, assessing the time of the father’s call. “The Turkish army drove a group from the Turkish southeast and pressed it deep into the steep and relentless mountains of northern Iraq.”

Until now, however, no information on the details of any negotiations that led to the call of the father -in -law, nor that the process of disarming the group can actually function. The Turkish government did not say anything about what PKK could offer in a replacement for disarmament.

Father’s statement comes while the Turkish government is facing accusations of disagreement. Since the local elections were held throughout the country in March 2024, more than 10 selected mayors were removed from their jobs and replaced by government named, mostly in the cities of Kurdska majority.

So far, the father -in -law has attracted a muffled response of Turkish officials. Efkan Ala, Deputy President of the Ruling Justice and Development Party, said the government focused on the outcome, not a statement.

“The essence of the call is the laying of weapons and the dissolution of the terrorist organization,” Ala said. “We’ll look at the outcome. Of course, like Turkey, we’ll see if that outcome will come true.”

A similar attempt to end the fight over a decade ago failed, after being demolished by the trial that lasted for two years in 2015, engulfing Turkish forces in a bloody conflict with PKK.
