Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has excluded negotiations with the administration of US President Donald Trump, stating past experiences and promising to respond strongly to any threats.
“There should be no negotiations with such a government because it is neither wise nor sensible, nor dignified,” Khamenei said on Friday to the Iranian military forces.
He referred to the 2015 Nuclear Agreement, which Trump withdrew from 2018 before presenting Iran with severe sanctions.
“If you threaten us, we will threaten them. If they act on their threats, we will act on ours,” Khamenei warned. “If they violate the safety of our nation, we will break theirs. This is our duty, as Islam requires.”
The statement comes in the week that Trump has signed an executive order to return to the “maximum pressure” sanction policy of his first term Iranbut he also invited Teheran and Washington to reach the “proven nuclear agreement.”
