French President Emmanuel Macron Incident calls “Islamist terrorism” because the alleged perpetrator is taken in police detention.

At least one person died and two police officers were seriously injured in an incident in the east FranceAccording to local media reports, with an alleged perpetrator, taken to police custody.

The incident happened shortly before 4:00 pm (15:00 GMT) during a demonstration on Saturday in the city of Mulhouse, a French BFM TV French channel said on Saturday, citing the local prosecution.

The passerby was killed trying to intervene while three police officers were injured, the prosecution added.

The French national prosecutor unit against Terror (PNat) took over the investigation. Police officers established a security parameter at the scene, and military units were also sent as spare. Forensic scientists also started looking for evidence.

Public Prosecutor Mulhouse Nicolas Heitz told the AFP news agency that the suspect was 37 years old, on the “Terror” prevention list, called FSPRT. It was launched in 2015 after the deadly attacks on the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the Jewish supermarket.

“Horror seized our city,” said Mayor Mulhouse Michele Lutz on Facebook.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the sting “Islamist terrorism”.

“No doubt is the act of Islamist terrorism,” Macron told reporters on the sidelines of the annual Fair of French Agriculture, adding that the Interior Minister was on his way to Mulhouse.

Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said that “fanaticism has hit again, and we are in mourning.”

As the investigations continue, Pnat added that he recorded a stab for murder and tried to kill “regarding a terrorist company.”
