Prosecutors at the trial of Chelsea striker Sam Kerra, who allegedly called a police officer “stupid and white”, asked the jury if the perceptions would be different that she said “stupid and black.”
Australia International was accused of racially aggravated harassment of PC Stephen Lovella during an incident in the southwest of London in the early hours of January 30, 2023 at the trial charged with the trial accused.
It is alleged that Kerr, 31, and her partner, midfielder West Ham Kristie Mewis, drank when a taxi driver drove them to the Twickenham Police Station who complained that they refused to pay the cleaning costs after one of them was ill and one from them broke the back window of the vehicle.
At the police station, Kerr reportedly became “violent and offensive” according to PC Lovell, calling it “f ****** stupid and white.”
In his final speech, Prosecutor Bill Emlyn-Jones KC asked the jury: “What if PC Lovell was a black male and what if he called him f ***** stupid and black?
“Of course this is not a fair question, because black -white is not an honest replacement.
“Calling a white man is not so filled, so you can’t just turn it, it’s not as easy as that.
“At the time of heat, this was an insult that was delivered to the race and that is what the law prohibits.
“The test for you is the same regardless of the ethnicity in question. She insulted him and, at that time, was hostile to him reference to his race.
“So the fact that you will be able to think about much worse examples of racial exacerbation is irrelevant.
“Would we consider it racially worse offering that she said stupid and black? Of course it would be, even a competition would not even be.”
During the trial, the court heard the references of the figures of the Chelsea teammate and the former main coach Emme Hayes.
Carly Telford, a goalkeeper who played for Chelsea from 2017 to 2022, described Kerr as a “close friend” and “introvert extrovert”.
She said, “You see skills on the field, their back turns [but] Far from the field, she is quite quiet and shy. Quite reserved. “
She described her as “generously” with her money and said that she often considers her that she can cover the costs of younger players at Nights Out “to make sure I can celebrate with us.”
Grace Forbes, defending Kerr, read statements by Mrs. Hayes, Captain Chelsea Millie Bright and midfielder Erin Cuthbert.
Mrs. Hayes, a former Chelsea manager and the current main coach of the American football team, said Kerr was a “exemplary role model” and described as “one of the warmest, friendly, most beautiful and most important players.”
She added, “She is calm and straight and careful. She comes from a wonderful family. She has the biggest heart, she is a big child in her heart, I think it’s good to manage everything that was thrown at her and the expectation she was put to her.”
Mrs. Bright described Kerr as “truly a special man,” while Mrs. Cuthbert said she was a “great friend and a teammate” who “has a unique ability to see the best in everyone.”
The trial continues.
