El Salvador offered to take over “dangerous criminals” held in US prisons – including those with US citizenship, says US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
After meeting President Nayib Bukele to visit the Central American state, he ruined that they were “deeply grateful”, adding that “no country has ever offered a friendship offer like this.”
El Salvador will also accept the deportation of migrants of any citizenship who are criminals and in the US illegally, said the Secretary of State.
Rubio praised Bukela for his politics about the violence of gangs that dramatically reduced crime rates in El Salvador – once in the capital of murders in the world – but were criticized by human rights groups.
Rubio told reporters: “He offered to offer in custody in custody in custody that a house in his prisons, including those with US citizenship and a legal residence.”
“We are deeply grateful. I talked to President Trump about it today,” he said.
Rubio on the first foreign tour as an American top diplomat and sought to determine the priorities of Trump administration in the region, including demanding that Panama make “immediate changes” to what he calls the “influence and control” of China over the Panaman channel.
Rubio said that Bukele was willing to return citizens from El Salvador, as well as migrants from other countries, and it seems he suggests that the focus will be on Latin American gang members – like MS -13 or a moment de Aragua.
Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump focused on accelerating the removal of illegal migrants, with the promise of “mass deportations”.
In allied moves, more active troops were sent to strengthen the border of the US-Mexico, and the president sought to stop the processing of migrants and asylum seekers through an executive order.
Bukele suggested to reporters that his offer at prisons went beyond the Migrant Accepting Agreement for 2019.
And in the post on the X, he said he had now offered the opportunity to “outsourcing part of his prison system.”
“We are ready to take only convicted criminals (including convicted American citizens) in our mega prison … in exchange for compensation.”
Bukele, former Mayor of San Salvador’s capital, won power for the first time in 2019 to the promise to create a “new era” for El Salvador, take over the gang violence and the corruption of the US.
He saw his popularity after launching a crime and gang action, turning El Salvador from the capital of the murder into one of the safest countries in the region.
His government made the arrests of anyone suspected of being involved in gang activity during their first term in power.
It is estimated that 75,000 people were arrested according to emergency measures that have been repeatedly enlarged, alarming groups for human rights.
Amnesty International criticized “a gradual replacement of gang violence with state violence” in the country.
