Australia’s captain Australia himself judged himself in London court, charged with raising abuse of a white cop after a drunk dispute with a taxi driver.
The front star, who plays for Chelsea in the women’s super league, told police officer Stephen Lovell: “You are f ****** stupid and white.”
Kerr, who has Indian origin, accepts the pronunciation of those words, but has declared that he is not guilty of one point of a racially difficult harassment. Her lawyer claimed to comment on power and privilege.
The 31-year-old was sitting in a dock on Monday in Kingston Crown court, while Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones told the jurors that she and her partner Kristie Mewis, who plays for West Ham United, called a taxi in early 30 January 2023, after night out.
“Their cabin travel did not go well,” Emlyn Jones said.
“Tabbi eventually called the police to complain about their behavior, reporting that they were trying to break the window.”
The taxi driver took them to a police station instead of Kerr’s house, after which she commented on Lovell’s ethnicity, Emlyn Jones said.
He added that there was no dispute over what Kerr said, which means that the jurors have to decide what she thinks and how Lovell feels.
Kerr’s lawyer Grace Forbes said Kerr’s words did not do her a criminal. “The law is a little tinted, a little more human than that,” she claimed.
“Kerr himself did not feel hostility towards the officer because he was white. The words were comment, we say – as badly expressed as possible – about positions of power, privilege and how these things can in color perceptions.”
Kerr is one of the world’s best attackers, scoring 199 career goals across the women’s super league, the Australian W-League and the national women’s football league.
She is also the highest scorer in Australia with 69 goals in 128 appearances, but has stood aside since she suffered an anterior cross -league injury in the knee in January 2024.
Her trial is expected to conclude this week.
