Behind closed doors, Trudeau says Trump’s threat to take over Canada real
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from Canada on Friday made his first comments in response to repeated statements by President Trump to want to attach to Canada and make him 51.
Mr. Trudeau made it clear that he did not think that Mr. Trump’s statements were joking and believes that annexation is something that Canada must treat as a serious threat.
And he believes that he knows why Mr. Trump craves Canada.
“I suggest that Trump’s administration not only knows how many critical minerals we have, but even the reason why they continue to talk about absorbing us and making us 51.” Mr. Trudeau said at the gathering of a company manager and business leaders in Toronto, according to people in a room listening to his comments.
The newspaper media were asked to leave the room at the time when Mr. Trudeau made his comments, but at least two news, Toronto Star and CBC, managed to hear and record them. Mr. Trudeau’s office refused to provide details about what the Prime Minister said.
“They are very aware of our resources,” Mr. Trudeau added, “what we have, and they really want to be able to benefit from them.”
And he continued, “But Mr. Trump has in mind that one of the easiest ways in which he absorbs our country. And that’s the right thing.”
Mr. Trump has been talking about the annexation of Canada for weeks because he laid the foundations for plans to impose 25 percent of tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States.
On Monday, Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Trump agreed to a 30-day return of tariffs after Canada pledged to adopt a more rigorous plan to secure his border with the United States.
During the commentary to reporters that day at an oval office, Mr. Trump restarted the statehood issue. “What I would love to see, Canada became our 51st state,” he said. “I would love to see it, but some people say it would be a long shot,” he added.
Canada is home 31 minerals considered critical of use in various industries, including for electric batteries, solar panels and semiconductors. Of this, Canada is prioritized by lithium, graphite, nickel, copper, cobalt and rare elements of the country as part of the strategy to position itself as a leader in a global fossil fossure crossing.
The supply chain is deeply integrated, and the health of the American economy depends on Canada, said François-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of the Canada Industry.
“This is a confident Canada,” Mr. Champagne told reporters at a meeting on Friday.
As part of his plan to reject tariffs, Canada implements the border security plan in response to Mr. Trump’s accusations that the country contributes to the “mass” trade in fentanil of the United States, although Canada is responsible for the small fraction of Fentanil crosses the border.
These measures include 10,000 staff assigned to the border, along with helicopters, drones and dog teams. The government also said that he would name “Fentanil Car” to guide the answer.
“We need to be very intentional in how we are still closely dealt with by the United States to make a case and show that Canada is responsible for the small part of the North American problem of Fentanil,” said Mr. Trudeau to business leaders, “but that this tragedy touched us bitterly .
