The driver took the car on Thursday to a union demonstration in Central Munich, injuring at least 28 people, including children, the authorities said.
Participants in the demonstration of official workers’ unions walked down the street around 10:30 in the morning when the car overcame a police vehicle after the gathering, accelerated and entered the back of the group, police said.
Officers arrested the suspect after firing a shot into the car, said police deputy chief Christian Huber. He added that at least 28 people were believed to have been injured and some of them seriously.
At the scene, damaged mini was seen, along with debris, including shoes.
“We are praying for the victims – we hope everyone will make them,” he told reporters at the scene of Bavarian government Markus Söder.
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter said the children were among the injured.
The suspect was a 24-year-old Afghan seeker for asylum, Huber said.
The State Minister of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, confirmed that a man is an asylum seeker. He said officials believe that the protest was randomly targeted.
The State Minister of Justice, Georg Eisenreich, said he was a prosecutorial department that explores extremism and terror studies the case.
The attack is probably not associated with an international conference
The incident follows a number of attacks involving immigrants in recent months who have pushed migration to the forefront of the German election campaign on February 2nd.
Three weeks ago, a two -year -old boy and a man were killed in an attack of a knife in Aschaffenburg, also in Bavaria. The Afghan whose request for asylum was rejected was a suspect in that attack.
This was followed by a knife attack in Mannheim and Solingen last year, in which the suspects were immigrants from Afghanistan and Syria.
In the Magdeburg Christmas Market, a suspect was a Saudi doctor who had previously approached the attention of various regional authorities in December.
The German main opposition conservative block, in which Söder was prominent figure, requested a more stricter approach to irregular migration, urging that many more people turn on the border and increase deportations.
Migration suppression is also a fundamental question for the extremely right alternative to Germany (AFD), which the polls placed second behind the conservatives. Other parties in the Federal Party are yet to be part of the coalition with the AFD, which is in observing the domestic intelligence agency to suspect the right-wing extremism, the allegations that the party rejects.
‘Awful attack’
Center-Li’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said she had already done a lot to reduce irregular migrations and that the opposition plans are incompatible with the Law on Germany and the European Union.
Scholz described the latest incident as a “terrible attack”.
“Anyone who commits crimes in Germany will not only be severely punished and must go to jail, but must expect that he cannot continue their stay in Germany – and that is also for countries that are very difficult to send people back to,” he said .
Scholz noted that his government had deported convicted criminals to Afghanistan on the flight in August and works on it again – “And not only once, but also constantly.”
The Bavarian capital will see great security in the coming days, as a three -day conference on security in Munich, an annual gathering of international foreign and security policies, opens on Friday.
Herrmann said the authorities did not believe that the car was frozen at the conference, but they still need to determine the motive.
