Amy Allen becomes the first woman to win the best songwriter Grammy
You may not have heard of the first woman who was previously called the best songwriter on Grammy – but you might be singing to one of her hits.
Amy Allen stands behind a series of pop-spots, including Espresso Sabrina Carpenter and please, please, and also nominated for writing songs with Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Timberlake and Dad McRae.
Allen was one of four women nominated for the songwriters of the year, non-classic, in the third year since it was launched as an independent category.
In her speech about accepting, she emphasized the previous lack of confession for songwriters, adding: “Without us, there would be no songs for anyone to win the awards.”
Previously, it was nominated for the same prize in 2023, and its inaugural year.
While not winning at the time, she took her first Grammy for her work on Harry Styles’ Harry’s House, who won the album of the year.
“The baby in me that started writing songs when I was a kid in Maine screams and cries and laughs at this moment,” she said as she picked up a golden turntable on Sunday night.
“This is the third year in which the songwriter of the year was even a category, so this award goes to all legends that have sounded lives and generations with all our stories.
“Then you should have received your flowers.”
Allen, the singer herself, who released her debut album last September, entered the music world at the age of eight – playing bass in the band of her sister.
She stayed in the band all the way to high school and then went to the school for care, before deciding to change the course and join the Berklee School of Music. Her first project was Amy and the engine, and she was an act of support for singers like Kacey Mussgraves and Vance Joy.
Allen’s first hit for the second artist came when she wrote the return of Selena Gomez – something she said “encouraged” her career in writing pop songs. She then paired with Gomez to write his mind and me, who was nominated for the best original Oscar for the song in 2023.
She continued to work with Halsey and with styles, including writing his hit, and she loves you, like Is Lizz. Her first nomination of Grammy was in 2022 for Justin Bieber Justice’s album.
Allen has since picked up a total of eight nominations, including four this year.
She helped Carpenter to write every song on the album with a ladder album, and the singer said that “the writer and friend is once in her life,” adding: “All this seems natural and effortlessly.”
This year, Allen’s Sukomići were singer Raye, along with writers Jessi Alexander, Jessie Jo Dillon and Edgar Barrera.
She said the award also belonged to them, saying that they were “fighting a good fight.”
“We are an engine that encourages the music industry,” she said. “And so long have been overlooked and underestimated.
“It means, we have to go a long way.”
