A woman loses both hands in the attack of sharks in the Turks and Caicos after the photo fails

The incident happened on February 7, when officers with the Environmental and Coast Resources Department of Turks and Caicos (Dec) said that a 55-year-old woman had overthrown Providenciales, the main island in the archipelago, when he attacked a shark.

Officials said It is estimated to be a shark approximately 6 feet long. However, the species has yet to be confirmed.

The investigation revealed that the woman “tried to deal with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to photograph.”

A woman’s horrified husband quickly rushed to the water to try to get a shark away from his wife, reported New Zealand Herald.

Other terrified passers -by also jumped in to help the woman and try to stop the bleeding.

She was rushed to a local hospital and later landed from the island for further medical care, the officials said.

The victim, which was not identified, had to amputate both hands, according to Visit the Turks and Caicos Island website.

The beaches in the area were closed “in the abundance of caution”, but later they were reopened on Sunday, the officials said.

“The Dec would like to invite the public to always be aware of its surroundings, followed by local advice and respects the marine life,” the officials said in a statement on their Facebook page.

“Swim in certain areas, avoid blurry water, never swim on your own and try to nourish the sea wild animals under any circumstances.”

Between 2021 and 2025, it was reported that four people were attacked by sharks, and that all the victims survived these attacks, according to the Visity Turks and Caicos Island website.

The website reported that one of the incidents occurred on May 2, 2024, when the male resident of Snorkeling on Leeward Reef from the northeast coast of Providenciales was attacked by a shark. As a result of the attack, officials said the man had to amputate his leg above his knee.

The attack comes after another shark attack was recorded the same day when two American tourists attacked a shark hours after the arrival of UA Popular resort In the Bahamas.

Authorities said the tourists were attacked by what seemed like a bull’s shark, leaving one woman with serious injuries while swimming in Bimini Bay’s waters.

The incident remains under investigation, and both women are expected to recover completely.
