The Magnitude-7.6 earthquake shook the Caribbean Sea southwest of the Kajman islands on Saturday, according to US geological research (USGS), and some islands and countries invited people near the coast to move into the interior in the case of Cunami.
Quake hit at 18:23 local time in the middle of the sea and had a depth of 10 kilometers, USGS said. His epicenter was 209 kilometers of southwest from the city of George on the Kajman Islands.
The US National Warning Center for Cunami said there was no warning for Tsunami for the US mainland, but was issued by Cunami Advisor for Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands later canceled.
The sound of alarms in the northwestern region of Puerto Rico made people leave the coastal areas, creating heavy traffic, according to local media.
Kajman management Kajman called the inhabitants near the coast to move to the interior and to the higher country. Wave heights are expected from 0.3 to one meter.
Puerto Rico Government Jenniffer González-Colón said in a statement that he was in contact with emergency agencies after consulting Tsunami, but did not recommend anyone to leave the shore.
The Dominican Government also issued a warning for the tsunami and recommended residents on the coast of the transition to high areas “more than 20 meters above sea level and two kilometers in the interior”. But later he canceled the warning.
The Cuban government asked people to leave the beach areas. The Department of Meteorology in Bahamas also issued a counseling on the tsunami, but urged its residents only to be “awake”.
The Honduran authorities said there were no direct reports on the damage, but this called on residents to keep away from the beaches.
Later, the National Administration for the Ocean and atmosphere of the US Government said that “Tsunami waves reaching one to three meters above the tide level are possible along some coasts of Cuba.”
“Real amplitudes on the coast may differ from prognosis because of insecurity in forecasts and local features,” the report said.
