Months of negotiations led by the conservative Austrian People’s Party ended without a coalition, leaving the president, a leftist former leader of the Greens, with little choice but to look further to the right.
The Freedom Party (FPO) is anti-immigration and pro-Russian.
Its leader, Herbert Kickle, is set to begin negotiations with the Conservatives and hopes to become chancellor.
Will it work?
And if he does, what does the future look like for the ailing Austrian economy and significant immigrant population?
