“We can’t cry about it”
Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim was asked if the Red Devils needed bigger players in set situations. They have not been very comfortable taking corners this season, in the Premier League they have conceded goals from such situations nine times.
Part of the problem may be the fact that one of the club’s central defenders is Lisandro Marinez, who stands at 5’9. Speaking about it, Amorim told reporters (via GOAL):
“You can see that every corner is an opportunity today. Sometimes you forget about the small and talented guys and put 11 guys in the corners or on free kicks. If you can do everything inside the penalty area.”
“But those are the rules and we can’t cry about it. We have to do the same thing and we have to focus on doing the same thing to the opponent. That’s my goal at the moment.”
Regarding whether the club should have added bigger players, Amorim added:
“No. What I’m saying is that if the lineups become that important, you can do anything. We have to learn that and we have to do the same thing even with the little guy.”
“We have to just copy and do the same thing without trying to change the rules. We have to use the rules to achieve i [same] goals in set pieces.”
Manchester United must find solutions to these problems soon, with the team currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table.
Ruben Amorim says the Manchester United defender could be given the captaincy for the clash with Newcastle United
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire could look set to take over the captaincy for the Red Devils’ clash with Newcastle United on Monday (December 30).
Regular captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended for this game after being sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. Speaking to the press, Amorim said (via GOAL):
“You’ll have to wait and see as far as the captain is concerned. He’s doing very well. He’s focused on the job and not on what people are saying. He has no excuses – even if he’s had some difficult moments. In that sense, he’s an example. He is there to play to help the team and he is trying to do that.”
Maguire has started his side’s last three Premier League games and is likely to do so on Monday. He is expected to play in the middle of the back three for Manchester United.
