WATCH: Rohit Sharma’s Ranji Trophy comeback for Mumbai ends briefly with 19 balls to spare against Jammu & Kashmir

In a much-awaited return to first-class cricket after a decade, the Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharmalimit with Mumbai in Early trophy is unfortunately discontinued. Rohit, who has been struggling for form in Test cricket for the past few months, was dismissed for just 2 runs off 19 balls against Jammu and Kashmir at the Wankhede Stadium on 23 January 2025.

Rohit joined the Mumbai training camp with the aim of rediscovering his form, especially after the recent challenges in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he managed only 31 runs in five innings. His involvement was part of a wider strategy to ensure that experienced players get involved in domestic cricket, a move which was supported by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhirwho emphasized the importance of playing first-class cricket for Test players.

Rohit’s return to the domestic arena ends in a cheap dismissal

Rohit was spotted walking determinedly on the field, dressed in the traditional white Mumbai cricket attire. The scoreboard at the time of his dismissal showed Mumbai at 12/1, with Rohit coming into play after the fall of the first wicket.

Facing the bowler Umar Nazir MirRohit tried to play a defensive shot but the blade of his bat found its way to the slip where he caught it Paras Dograthus ending his brief return to the Ranji Trophy. The dismissal was a classic example of how a single mistake can change the course of a batsman’s innings, especially in the challenging conditions of domestic cricket.

Hopes of a strong comeback were dashed in the Ranji Trophy clash

The match against Jammu and Kashmir was significant as it was part of the second phase of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy and Mumbai was preparing for the sixth round match. Rohit’s desire to train with the Mumbai team under head coach Omkar Salvi has raised hopes among fans and cricket pundits that it could be a platform for the captain to regain his touch in longer format cricket. However, the outcome was far from expected.
